Prof. Dr. Kaaj Baago, the Church History Professor, of my M.Th course, had taken the trouble to sift the many letters of the last century. Thus he has done a great service for the future historians in India to have an easy access to the documents of the last century. This detailed reference to the valuable microfilms of the history of Christianity in India is made here in order that posterity will benefit from these reels of microfilm. Need will arise in different contests and it is not easy to send someone to London to read in the CMS archives. It contains letters from the CMS missionaries not only of South India, but also of North India, Pakistan, Africa etc. They all come under the scope of the research of these microfilms.
Dr. Kaaj Baago is no more a missionary of the Danish Missionary Society. He is the Ambassador of the Danish government in New Delhi. It is quite a change in the role of the man who played a significant role in making available the copies of the valuable records in microfilm rolls. Reel No. 14 and Reel No. 15 of these microfilms in the UTC archives are useful for the period of our study (1886-1900).
Fr. M.K. Kuriakose was a librarian of the U.T. College, Bangalore. He was formerly the archivist after obtaining his M.Th. degree in Church History at the U.T. College. As I was able to spare a day in Bangalore in May '86. I went to the library and requested him to show me the documents. I sat for six hours, facing the light of the microfilm reader machine and I was happy that I could trace the origins of the YMCA in Trichur. Since some facts have relevance to Trichur town in general and to the CMS mission school, such facts were copied as fast as one could physically do it.
The following facts copied from the correspondence of the CMS missionaries in Trichur will tell the story of the beginnings of the Trichur YMCA as founded by Mr. A.E. David in the early part of 1887. It would be worthwhile to connect the founder to the present day. The late Rev. N.I. Ignatius was the son-in-law of the founder, Mr. (later Rev.) A.E. David, Rev. Ignatius is the father of Sri. N.I. David, Deputy Superintendent of police, Trichur. It is a happy corollary that the Trichur YMCA president Sri. C.D. Paul's mother happens to be a cousin of Rev. Ignatius. So, it comes to this. The founder who ventures the project a century ago stands two generations away.
